Friday March 5 2021 A Chat with Cartoonists/Comic Book Creators Jackie Crofts and Dan Schkade (on-demand presentation via YouTube) Reference Librarian, Ryan LaFerney, chats with local cartoonists/comic book creators, Jackie Crofts and Dan Schkade, about all things comics! How to Slap Together a Story in 30 minutes or Less with Dan Schkade (on-demand presentation via YouTube) Cartoonist/Comic Book artist, Dan Schkade, following prompts from his twitter followers for two characters and a setting -- on camera, will pick one of each at random and then quickly develop a story around those three prompts, plus some quick character designs. Along the way, he'll explain the storytelling and design fundamentals going into these characters (antagonist/protagonist, motivation, how their personalities inform the narrative, and how their designs reflect that). Hopefully, this will give attendees an example of how to quickly slap the building blocks of a story together in a simple way they can do with their own narratives. Saturday, March 6 2021 The Origins of Comic Books @ 2 p.m. via Zoom Invite (sign up here - registration opens February 22, 2021) In this interactive online visual presentation, media and humanities professor Mark Harper describes some of the key moments in the history of art and literature that produce what we now know as comic books: 8 pieces of paper, measuring 13.5” x 10”, printed front and back, folded in half and bound by two staples (originally sold for 10¢). The session will cover the caricatures and engravings of 18th century printmaker and social commentator William Hogarth, the groundbreaking appearance of “The Yellow Kid” in the daily newspapers of the 1890s, the social impact of the pulp magazines and hard-boiled detective fiction of the 1920s and 1930s, and the phenomenal success of Action Comics 1 (featuring the first appearance of Superman) in June of 1938. Along the way, Mark will offer some explanations on some of the controversies surrounding comic books as “suitable reading material” and discuss the evolution of the sequential narrative format.
